In addition to teaching English full-time at Magnolia High School in Anaheim, California, Kelly has an extensive background in secondary literacy education. Kelly is the author of several books, most recently Readicide: How Schools Are Killing Reading and What You Can Do About It (Stenhouse 2009). |

Jill Maxe and Tina Haselius
Jill is a Literacy Coach and Reading Recovery Teacher-Content Coach with St. Paul Public School’s Center for Professional Development. With 25 years in education she has taught all grades from Pre-K to 6th grade.
Tina is an Elementary Literacy Coach with St. Paul Public Schools and is an Adjunct Professor at Concordia University. She partners as an Internal Coach with the MN Reading Corps and the Minnesota Response to Intervention Center. |

A Story-Writing Recipe for Kids

Bullard’s story-writing recipe has been “kid-tested and teacher approved” over the course of her school visits with thousands of students. This easy-to-learn approach allows a wide range of young writers to experience creative success, and can be modified for different age levels. This workshop will allow educators to try out some of the activities firsthand, while giving them the basics they need to turn their classroom into places where students look forward to cooking up a story! |

The author and illustrator behind a picture book rarely meet. But this duo worked together, sharing research materials and checking references, to create the award-winning book Storm Codes. This historically accurate book tells the story of a young girl waiting for her father to come home from a shipping trip during a fierce storm on Lake Superior. Hear from both the author and illustrator as they demonstrate engaging methods for connecting Storm Codes to cross-curriculum learning opportunities for early elementary students in language arts, social studies, geography, art, and math. Try toothbrush painting, make flag code streamers, count your lucky taconite and more! Storm Codes won the Tau State Jeanette Fair Children’s Book Award, the Northeastern Minnesota Book Award Honor for Children’s Literature, and it’s been named to the New York Reading Association Charlotte Award Suggested Reading List for Grades 3-6. |
Tracy Nelson Maurer and Christina Rodriguez
Tracy Nelson Maurer has written more than 70 nonfiction and fiction books for children. She is completing her MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University, and lives north of the Twin Cities where she can easily escape to Lake Superior. Christina Rodriguez, an Air Force “brat” born to multicultural parents overseas, has illustrated several books, magazine articles, newsletters, CD covers, and other materials. She earned her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and moved to Stillwater, Minnesota just in time for Storm Codes. |

Textbook Feature Analysis: Beyond the Bold Words

Through the eyes of a student, reading a textbook can be an ominous task. Unfortunately, for those students willing to attempt the reading, it only takes a few frustrating attempts until they abandon the textbook altogether. This session will explore the reasons students struggle with nonfiction texts, in particular, textbook reading. It will also focus on two ways to make reading textbooks and nonfiction texts more accessible for students. |
